How to Drill Down and Squeeze More Traffic and Sales from Your List
i thought i would share a VERY POWERFUL technique with you which will generate you a lot More Sales and Traffic and its all to do with your most powerful asset…… your email list!
this does of course only apply if you have a list however its still important to learn for when you do start building a list
basically when we send out an email to our list there are a few different outcomes that will usually happen
1. a person opens your email and clicks your link to your offer/info link
2. a person opens the email but doesnt click any link
3. a person doesnt even open your email
Now of course everyones list is different because you may have a highly responsive list which are always eager to read your next email or you may have a list which are not very responsive, which ever the case i guarantee after reading this post you will be able to make more money and send more traffic from any of your emails that you send out to your list
Ive always been a believer in making the most of our traffic and to test and tweak everything so that each campaign we launch, we can make it as profitable or get the best results we possibly can
Email marketing is not any different
Here is a scenario which will explain how this technique works:
1. Imagine you have an email list of 500 people
2. you send out an email to those 500 people about a new ebook that you have just created priced at $20
3. 24 hours later you look at your stats in your email account and see that 50 people have opened your email about your offer.
4. you then look at your other stats and see that out of those 50 people only 20 people have clicked on your link in your email going to your new ebook offer page
5. out of those 20 people that click on your link, 10 people buy the product and you make $200
Excellent you made $200….
Well its not really excellent… its actually pretty poor!
The question you should be now asking yourself is…
HOW CAN I INCREASE MY SALES EVEN MORE WITH THE SAME EMAIL LIST???
Now were getting somewhere
Here is the secret!
What you do now is, you go into your email subscribers list and segment your list from the people that opened your email and the people that didnt
Firstly make sure you select the list which you sent out the broadcast from

Next select from the drop down box “message not opened” and then on broadcast (if you sent a broadcast)

Then make sure you name your new segmented list which you are now going to email again

OK lets continue…..
so out of the 500 people of the previous email, only 50 people opened the email
so now all you do is drill down and ONLY email the 450 subscribers that didnt open your email
This time changing the subject line with maybe a more “call to action” title, but importantly you dont use the same subject line as before (you need to test and use compelling headlines)
Then 24 hours later you look at your stats and see that out of those 450 people another 75 have opened your email (awesome)!
out of those 75 people, 20 people have clicked on your link
out of those 20 people that clicked on your link to your ebook offer page, another 8 people buy your ebook for $20
your total profit now is $360
WOW…. a 90% increase in profits by only drilling down once into our email list
You see this is the power of drilling down into your list so that you can increase your profits
REMEMBER what i have just explained is ONLY 1 level of driling down, because you can now get the other 375 and drill down even further and basically repeat the above process
eventually you will get to a point where you have squeezed out as much as you can from this one offer and thats great. You made $200 after the first email but then after drilling down 3 or 4 more times you would of made a lot more extra sales just by following the above process

There are just a couple of things to consider though
I use aweber and this is a feature within the account so i cant say what other email services will have these features or not but if its a professional email service like aweber then im sure it will have something similiar
PS: I was thinking about making a video showing how this works in real time, and if i get enough requests for a video then i will make one
PPS: this technique is not only effective when your trying to sell something. You can still use this if your just trying to generate traffic to a new blog post or an article somewhere and you want to get plenty of exposure to it
there are some additional tips and other steps to take but this is the basic process and if you already have an aweber account then you should already know the basics anyway
lastly remember… you can also drill down on all of your subscribers that open your emails but dont click on your links. I didnt really want to cover this in this post because i just wanted to explain the basic process of how everything works. If enough people request more information on this technique then i will do another blog post on the whole technique.

Comments on How to Drill Down and Squeeze More Traffic and Sales from Your List
Good work Paul, I was wondering how this segmentation worked.
Now why didn’t I get an email in my inbox informing me of this article?
@Ben:
cheers ben
you didnt get an email because i didnt email my list about this latest blog post, i dont always email my list when ever i do a new one. If your subscribed to the rss feed then you will get updates that way
i will admit though i do have to sort my rss feed out in my sidebar lol, its a bit of a shambles at the mo, so i will sort that out soon
what i show you in this blog post is how to segment your list from people that open and that dont etc
the other way to segment your list is from buyers and prospects. (This is the most important part of segmenation of your lists)
otherwise you will have prospects and customers on the same list, which just cause an absolute disaster (you dont ever ever want to do this)
i will maybe do a post on that aswell at some stage too!

Hi Paul,
Great blog post – thanks for sharing!
I found your blog post from Mark Thompson’s.
One issue with segmenting based on who opened:
As I’m sure you know (but I’m repeating for the sake of the reader, who may not):
Tracking of email opens is not completely accurate.
Email opens are tracked by the presence of a 1pixel by 1pixel image within the email message.
When the email is opened, your email server gets notified that this particular image has just been displayed for the particular recipient who opened the email.
But this often doesn’t work, because many people have images turned off in their email.
So when re-emailing those who have not yet opened your email, you are likely to get some people who DID open the email, in your net.
I’m a big fan of segmentation though.
Unfortunately Aweber doesn’t make segmentation so easy in a couple of respects.
For example, it doesn’t allow you to move people from one list to the next.
The individuals would have to manually subscribe to any new list you wish to add them to.
This makes Aweber less flexible than it ought to be… and that can be frustrating at times.
But it’s still one of the best autoresponders around… and is particularly good if you’re just starting out. I still use it. It’s not perfect, but works quite well.
Thanks for the post!
Bolaji.
@Bolaji O | The Nocrastinator:
hey bolaji
i know what you mean about it not being 100% accurate, but its realy the best way for us to track stats in aweber for now. There always making improvements so you never know if they get enough feedback about certain issues then they may well change some stuff, cheers for pointing it out though
also you say about aweber dont make it easy to segment people from 1 list to the next
i will be honest, ive never had any problems. I use the automation feature is this what you use bolaji?
i set my campaigns up so that is someone buys they are automatically taken off my prospect list and put onto my buyers list automatically without me doing anything
if this isnt what you mean then i think the reason why aweber dont allow you to move people from 1 list to the next is because of spam. I think they like to keep everything so that someone has to personally opt in if they want to be on another list. Not only that it would make the list more targeted if they actually opt in themselves rather than us exporting them into another list ourselves
be interested to hear your view though bolaji
cheers
